No matter what you call these hats messy bun or ponytail hats, one thing we can agree on is that they are making an impact on fashion world. These crochet hats are becoming popular all over the web and in local areas like my little town. From Fall to Spring go out and keep your head warm and look good in half the time. I am writing this post because these hats are really quick and simple to work up, and the embellishments that you can make for these are unlimited.

I like this pattern because it is very easy and simple to work up. 

Abbreviations used in this pattern


  • Ch = Chain
  • Sl St = Slip Stitch
  • St = Stitch
  • ea = Each
  • Rep = Repeat
  • Rnd = Round
  • Sc = Single Crochet
  • Dc = Double Crochet
  • FO = Finish Off

Materials:

Elastic hair band

4 ply yarn any color

Hook size I

Gauge not applicable

Here is a chart for different Head Sizes. I use this pattern with my toboggan patterns they are written out from Preemie to Adult large. I'll post that in another post.

Pattern

Can be made without elastic hair band 

Ch 33

Sl st to first ch forming a ring.

Ch 2 (ch 2 does not count as first st), place 33 dc into ring, this will be your first rnd.

Using hair band

Join with a sl st to the hair band.

Rnd 1: ch 2, place 33 dc into band.

Rnd 2: Dc into same st as ch 2, dc in next st, 2 dc's into next st, *1 dc into next 2 sts, 2 dc's into next st* rep from * to * around, sl st into first dc ( 44 sts )

Rnd 3:  Ch 2, dc into same st as ch 2, and next 2 sts, 2 dc into next st, *1 dc into next 3 sts, 2 dc's into next st* rep from * to * around, sl st to first dc. ( 55 sts )

Rnd 4: Ch 2, dc into same stitch as ch 2, dc into next 3 sts, 2 dc's into next st, *1 dc into next 4 sts, 2 dc's into next st* rep from * to * around, sl st to first dc. ( 66 sts )

Rnd 5 - 15: Ch 2, dc into same st and ea st around. ( 66 sts )

I stop at the row indicated by my toboggan pattern so that it fits that head size that I am making it for. However the following rnds can be added if you choose, This will create a different look, and I know your all about being creative.

Rnd 16 - 20: Ch 1 , sc into same st as ch 1, sc ea st around.


Now you can go out looking stylish while keeping your head warm.
